Tattooing is a traditional art form practiced by many cultures for over 5000 years. it comes from the Tahitian word tatau which means to mark something. People believe that tattooing was discovered on accident, when someone got ash or dirt into a wound and after it healed it left a scar. In 1890 the first electronic was invented by an American tattoo artist named Samual O'Reilly.

The tattoos normally expressed status decent or tribal afiliation.Maoris were also known for getting facial tatoos which although were unique still pollowed Maori tradition.
